Nature Observed
An exhibition of new ceramics
by Hanne Westergaard

15 June - 24 July 2009
Persistence Works, 21 Brown Street, Sheffield

The works in this exhibition represent a new direction in my ceramics, moving away from the primarily functional.

The surface textures and colours of my new pieces reflect aspects in nature I especially admire, such as the elusive colour of the sky in the early morning and the freshness of a newly opened wild flower.

While on holiday in Norfolk, I tried to capture these aspects of nature by casting patterns left in sand by the retreating sea on the beach at Wells, as well as flowers in a cottage garden. I took these casts back with me to my studio and developed them into working moulds, from which I formed porcelain artworks which are displayed in this show alongside new soda/wood-fired vessels.

Open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm
